North India
The Corbett National Park, nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas, and Dudwa National Park, on the Indo-Nepal border, are famous for their lush grasslands, marshes and meandering rivers. The tiger inhabits both these parks, while the other population comprises of elephant, deer, boar, sloth bear and more than 500 species of birds.
West India
The barren mountains of the Sariska National Park are the home to tigers, leopards and panthers. The picturesque ruins of the Ranthambhore Fort are located in the Ranthambhore National Park, popular for tigers, jackals and marsh crocodiles. The Gir National Park is the home to the last surviving population of the Asiatic lions. The Keoladeo Bird Sanctuary in Bharatpur has over 400 exotic bird species.
Central India
The Bandhavgarh National Park boasts of the highest density of tiger population in India. The Kanha National Park is as famous for its terrain and flora as it is for its fauna.
South India
The open forests of the Bandipur National Park make it easy for visitors to spot the most important resident, the Asian elephant. The hilly terrain and dense deciduous forests make Mudumalai an attractive wildlife reserve. The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is popular for wild elephants, bison, deer, tigers, leopards and hundreds of species of birds.
East India
The Gangetic delta provides the breathtaking environs for the Sunderbans Wildlife Sanctuary, home to the famous Royal Bengal Tiger. Located on the banks of the river Manas in the Bhutanese foothills, Manas National Park protects several endangered species of animals and birds. The Kaziranga National Park is famous for the one horned rhino.
